After 3 years fucking around in SL, I've met a lot of people. You connect differently in SL than in a RL chatroom. If someone ignores your IM, there are plenty of others who will, and you will eventually fulfill that sexual fantasy thats been lurking or just yur daily horniness.
Yet, a connection in SL offers an evolutionary opportunity into the psyche, the alter ego, the soul of another person. This may not be anything you're interested in. However, I have found it a novel and exciting experience. Meeting someone in SL, as manifested in their Avatar, can allow you to discuss and explore levels of emotion and understanding otherwise unavailable in RL.
In my three years in SL I have seen plenty of hot gayvies, however I have also had the opportunity to connect with a few on a deep level, sometimes passionate, sometimes tragic. Recently I met a gayvie begging for me to be his Master. I wondered why he was so persistent. After a while he opened up about how he had been incarcerated at 22 for drug related charges and served a 7 year term. Going into prison he was str8. His first week in jail he was gang raped. A big guy decided to make him his bitch, and provided the protection he needed, in exchange for sex. Thus began his inclination to M/S homosexual relationships.
Listening to this story from the very person who experienced it was a lot different than watching a documentary or fictional account. However, I have also met some gayvies who have been consistently kind, aware, happy, fuckbuddies (or not).
Bottom line for me is, in RL I try much harder to look beyond the surface. It's still dodgy to not make it a sexual encounter. However, I know behind that face there's a conscience, a spirit, a soul, and it can be far more beautiful than what is on the exterior.
